More on Sleep #illumedati

Hey everyone, it’s Medicine Mondays again. Today is going to be a short post “More on Sleep”.

More on Sleep

In previous posts, I’ve talked about my Snoring and I even did a follow-up post. I talked about Sleep Hygiene in general before too.

For a little while, I felt the little tweaks I was doing was helping. However, at this point I’ve been feeling kind of tired and run-down and basically just not rested. This is especially true on the weeks that I work, as you would expect with my evening work schedule.

My primary care physician (who is awesome by the way) had already referred me to get a sleep study done. I kept putting off and then forgetting to make an appointment. However, at my wife’s request, I went ahead and made the appointment, which I will go to this Wednesday.

From my understanding the appointment is really just getting the home sleep study machine and learning how to use it at the office. Then I would use it that time and return it the following morning. The results would then be sent to my primary care physician.

It’s good to clarify that a home sleep study test isn’t as good as a true overnight sleep study. However, I think it’s probably best utilized as a screening test. Based on its results, I may need an actual overnight sleep study (at the hospital or sleep center).

Why the change?

Well, I think before I was able to compensate for any sleeping issues just because I was relatively young and would just sleep longer.

For example, I usually sleep 8-9 hours a night. When I’m working I usually sleep between 12:15 am to around 6:00 am. The kids usually wake me up as they get ready for school, and then I go to sleep again at 6:30 or 7 am until about 9:30 or 10 am. So yea, about 8-9 hours. Of course, this is interrupted sleep, so it’s not quite as good as uninterrupted sleep, but I’ve been ok with it.

However, lately I’ve been feeling more tired and run down during the day. Maybe before I was able to compensate with being younger and drinking coffee, but it seems I can’t really do that anymore. As such, I’m going to see if there is anything I can do to help with my sleeping.

Additionally, I’m hoping I can get my snoring under control as well so that my wife can get a better night’s sleep as well.

I’ll update you guys on how things go.

TL;DR

On to a home sleep study… and maybe more.

We’ll see how it goes.
