Hey everyone, it’s Veteran’s Day. Today, we honor our military veterans.
I was always taught to use the phrase “Thank you for your service.” I thought that was the best way to thank a veteran. However, recent research has demonstrated that as many as half of veterans feel uncomfortable when told that. Others feel this phrase is so overused that is almost an “empty platitude”.
The poll found that instead of saying the simple thank you, most veterans and service members preferred gratitude that went beyond simple platitudes and that tried to connect with them on a more personal level.
It’s an interesting finding.
That said, I think it’s probably still reasonable to start a conversation with “Thank you for your service”. However, I’ll also try to find some way to connect on a more personal level from now on as well, if the situation allows for it.
Just some food for thought on this Veteran’s Day.
