Hey everyone, it’s Medicine Mondays again. It’s about that time again… the Match has come and gone. Let’s talk about “Preparing for Residency”.
Preparing for Residency
To be perfectly honest, this is kind of a lazy post on my part since it is kind of rehash of multiple prior posts. However, the Match happens every year and every year there are new 4th years medical students who will be starting their residency. For that reason, it’s worthwhile to post this.
The other reason is because this last weekend of work has been particularly difficult. We were a little short staffed and I am feeling a little tired this morning. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine, I just need to get some Starbucks before work — which I don’t normally do anymore. However, for today I’ll make an exception.
Ok, so basically The Match has come and gone. Some of you may have already have secured your place to live for at least the next year or so. If you took my advice, you didn’t buy a house. However, for some of you, there was no convincing you so I hope things work out well for you.
So now let’s go through the posts which I think you should read before starting residency:
Preparing to start residency:
- Pre-Residency Evaluation
- Survival Mode
- How to be a Good Intern
- Time of Death
- Being Human
- Welcome to the New Interns
- I just realized it’s July…
Not in Medicine Mondays, but related: Mr. Smith and Dr. Jones
I may be a little too late to talk about the Roth 401k/403b in Residency stuff since you guys have probably already filled out the paperwork. However, it’s still ok to make a change as soon as you start…
Future you will thank you.
Roth 401k/403b in Residency
(this is technically Finance Fridays, but it is important enough that I include it separately in this Medicine Mondays Roadmap as well)
- Roth 401k/403b in Residency
- Roth 401k/403b in Residency How To
- Roth 401k/403b in Residency Portfolios
- Roth 401k/403b in Residency Analysis

New Stuff
The other thing to keep in the back of your mind as you start your residency is where do you want to be when you’re:
Finishing residency/fellowship:
- The (Temporary) First Job
- Choosing Your First Job
- Malpractice Insurance
- Physician Contracts
- Physician Contracts Part Two
- Physician Contracts Part Three
Also, special mention for looking ahead at the future:
That’s enough to get your started.
If you still want to read some more stuff, there is a lot more stuff here:
Medicine Monday Roadmap 1-7-2019
Speaking of which, I should probably update those Roadmaps again… maybe next week.
TL;DR
Your journey into residency begins soon.
Read some of this stuff to know what to expect.
Try to keep the future you want in mind.
